Chapter Eleven

The Great Hall

Thora was on her feet when they arrived. She was inspecting some equipment and speaking with Osbourne. Lyles was stretched out on the gurney, not as an experiment, his arms were folded behind his head. He was taking a nap. The scrubs and Dr. Liang waited on the fringes, standing in a row like privates in the army waiting to be addressed.

She saw Cass and smiled, reaching out for the Geist device. “I knew you wouldn’t fail me.” She raised her eyebrow when Cass did not immediately relinquish it.

“I don’t know if I should give this to you.”

Thora gave a grim smile. “You don’t have to. You can keep it for yourself.”

Cass gave her a hard stare and handed her the cane. Thora returned it to her side and looked to Dr. Liang and the others watching their exchange.

“I didn’t instruct you to take prisoners.”

“She said she wanted to talk to you. I suppose the others do as well.”

“I know of a few of them,” Thora said.

Dr. Liang took a breath. “My loyalty is to Olympicorp not Cavanaugh. We had a good working relationship and once we were even fond of each other, but for me time weathers such feelings.”

Thora scoffed. “Cassandra, Dr. Liang is a true cultist. She sees Olympicorp as a religion, man’s true salvation. She will gladly let others stand on her shoulders, blind to the fact that the so-called enlightened are mad only for power and wealth.”

Dr. Liang looked to Cass. “Perhaps I have been blind in the past. You spared our lives twice today. You used your ability to save us. Cavanaugh would have wrangled the both of you.”

Thora scoffed again and looked to Cass, then Dr. Liang. “Despite your sentimental words, I have use for your intellect and knowledge. I extend the offer to you as well, Dr. Osbourne. It will not be an easy road, but I will never stand on your shoulders.”

Charybdis appeared. She moved slowly and glanced about with red-rimmed eyes. She saw Cass and smiled.

“It seems I am not the only one in your debt,” Thora said.

“What about Lyles?” she said. He was still napping on the gurney oblivious to the scene around him.

“I’m not a babysitter,” Thora said.

“You have to at least get him to civilization and set him up with a passport and money to go wherever he wants.”

Lyles sat up. “That,” he shouted. “That is exactly what I want.”

“I suppose we have the resources here on the premises,” Thora said and looked to her new underlings. “Correct?”

Osbourne nodded.

“Don’t forget your promise to me, Thora,” Cass said. “Where’s Elle? What is Project Songbird?”

Thora seemed surprised at her last question.

“Well?” Cass asked.

“Osbourne, you seem to know your way around here. Can you show her to the archives, help her find any information she asks for,” Thora said.

Osbourne nodded. “Right this way.”

As they were leaving, Thora announced that she was hungry.

The archive was another large room, except instead of pods there were rows of tall glowing shelves.
